Newsday plans to hire 25 employees due to digital expansion
Newsday is opening a new digital operation in one of the wealthiest areas in the world; Westchester County. Cablevision, the owner of Newsday will hire 25 new editors, reporters and digital content specialists. Newsday had started a free tabloid called, amNewYork but announced that they will not be returning to New York City.
In a letter their employee’s they said,
“First, Newsday is expanding! Building on the success of its online and mobile products, Newsday will launch new digital products — web as well as iPhone, iPad and Android apps – specifically for Westchester County beginning early next year. Comprehensive, compelling hyper-local news, sports, opinion, things-to-do and entertainment coverage will serve the Westchester community.”
This is extremely exciting for young journalists like myself. Any group hiring means more opportunities for aspiring journalists. But even more important than the possibility of jobs it the expansion itself. This proves that journalism is not dead. Its still very much alive and news corporations are investing in it.
“Second, we will align our highly successful amNewYork newspaper more closely with Newsday’s editorial operations and Cablevision Media Sales. To be clear, Newsday is not returning to New York City. We are very proud of our free New York newspaper and look forward to identifying ways to enrich the editorial content with the full weight of what Newsday’s vast operation can bring, as well as add news and opinion pages to make it an even stronger newspaper for New York City.”
Newsday‘s decision not to return to the city is probably a good one. New York City is a hard market and having an office there is extremely expensive. I think they should leave NYC to the other news corporations that have been covering it. The move to Westchester County is one that may give Newsday a new start. As people in Manhattan often refer to Newsday as exclusively Long Island news, opening in Westchester County gives the company an opportunity to redefine itself. It will be exciting to see where they end up.
